Jane Enkin Music and Storytelling

Teaching and Workshops

Jane Enkin is a dedicated teacher of adults, and she offers workshops on subjects such as storytelling, Jewish music, and women’s spirituality.

Over 20 years ago, Jane read about the little known ritual of making neshome likhtelekh, soul candles for Yom Kippur. She began inviting groups of women into her home to make beeswax candles and contemplate the souls of people who are important to them. In recent years, Jane has been asked to deliver participatory workshops on the candles for the Chesed Shel Emes Jewish Burial society, and the Jewish Child and Family Service of Winnipeg.

For many years, Jane facilitated the Rosh Chodesh (first of the month) women’s gatherings at Shaarey Zedek synagogue. These included a sharing circle, with each participant speaking about ancestors or teachers, and important events in the month past and the month to come, while she wove a ribbon into a communal weaving. Jane then led craft  and writing exercises as creative midrash, and hosted a guest speaker and discussion each month.

Jane writes poetry using a line of text as a prompt, often a phrase from the Bible. She leads writing workshops, inviting participants to respond to text in their own voices.

As an elementary school teacher in Toronto, Jane told a story each day to her students, and taught storytelling technique. She delivers storytelling workshops to children, their teachers, and other adults called Dreaming Out Loud. The workshops feature ways to use sense memory to shape stories and make them vivid for the teller and their audience.

Jane has been a guest lecturer for University students, on topics including Jewish women’s customs, music in Hasidism, and approaches to storytelling. For the Capital Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Victoria, BC, Jane spoke on Wise Fools and on Story and Place. Other presentation topics have included Hasidic stories, Jewish women’s spirituality, and Yiddish folksong.

Jane has presented at Winnipeg’s Limmud Festival several times. She researched and led a large ensemble of musicians performing World Jewish music, from places including India, Africa and Eastern Europe. With susn palmer, she led the workshop Where Are the Women? A Look at Stories from Jewish Folk Traditions, inviting participants to enjoy, explore and connect their own experiences with brief tales from the past. After leading a Soul Candles workshop, this time for men and women, Jane presented, in 2025, Back to the Garden – The Garden in Jewish Writing, with texts spanning the years from the Bible to the poetry of Yehudah Amichai.
